Are People Born Wicked?

Wednesday, September 12

This summer my entire extended family converged on the Jones house for the week of Fourth of July. It was great seeing my parents, sisters, nieces, nephews and brothers-in-law. We spent three days in the Poconos hiking, rappelling, and fishing, and another three days touring all the sites in New York City.

Besides spending time with those I love most in this world, my highlight came on Friday night when we went to see Wicked on Broadway. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. It was funny, entertaining, and thought-provoking

There’s a question Glinda asked early on in the play that for some reason I can’t get out of my mind:

GLINDA
And Goodness knows
The Wicked's lives are lonely
Goodness knows
The Wicked die alone
It just shows when you're Wicked
You're left only
On your own

ALL
Yes, Goodness knows
The Wicked's lives are lonely
Goodness knows
The Wicked cry alone
Nothing grows for the Wicked
They reap only
What they've sown

GLINDA
Are people born Wicked? Or do they have
Wickedness thrust upon them?

The entire play was an attempt to answer that single question.

I've been trying to come to terms as of late (primarily because I'm finishing a book on forgiveness) with a few deeply entrenched sins, attitudes, and struggles I've been unable to eradicate from my life for over 25 years now. Glinda has me thinking: Are people like me born Wicked? Or do we have Wickedness thrust upon us?

I think we are all born good.. it like other things.. the environment we grow up in has a great deal of impact on how we end up BUT, it does NOT have to stay this way... Once we are old enough to realize that we have a choice to keep that wickedness (Glinda is referring to) we have the responsibility to either keep that behavior pattern or change it..
The Wicked Witch of the West was probably just misunderstood as a girl and maybe even teased by the "cool" kids in high school for wearing that pointy hat.. She's just "Getting Even" with the world by the time Dorothy showed up..and even before then.. :)
Take Care..

Interesting question. You may want to check out this link for some info. from Dr. Larry Crabb that may shed some insights to coming a little closer to an answer: http://cc.christiancourses.com/courses/content/ftsc101/pdfs/sc101_lssn06s.pdf

Maybe it is the other way around. Maybe we are ALL born wicked and need to be taught how to be good by the examples and teachings of those around us.

Due to the introduction of sin in the world since the incident in the Garden we are all born bent away from God. Every believer's flesh wars against the spirit. Paul said it so well Why do I do the things I don't want to do.

A lot of people want to see this amazing novel turned musical made into a movie, and I am creating a place for all of us to discuss how this movie should look, feel, sound, and be.
A Wicked Movie
Check it out and leave your comments, I need feedback, or else it will simply be ramblings on the net.

I never had to teach my children to be self centered or lie, etc. Just the opposite!
