Countdown To The CMT Awards

I’ve lost my mind.

Up until four months ago I thought the only people who listened to country music were those who skipped routine dental visits so they could buy extra beer and pork rinds for when the cousin they were engaged to came over to watch Wrestlemania and NASCAR.

Now, unbelievably, and I’m sure this will come as a great shock to those within the church I serve; I’m slowly changing my mind.

While I’m still convinced most country music lovers contemplate going to family reunions to pick up women, I’m actually, and it shocks me to say this, starting to like it.

Rascal Flatts. Sugarland. Toby Keith. Kenny Chesney. Taylor Swift. Keith Urban. Martina McBride. Four months ago I had no idea who any of these people/groups were. Then, out of nowhere, I made the decision that I was sick of listening to classic rock and alternative rock and wanted to learn a little bit about a musical genre I knew nothing about. So I forced myself to listen to 92.5 WXTU “Philadelphia’s Country Station” everyday for four long months.

And I’ve been surprised.

So much so, that, believe it or not, we’re going to do our first-ever (and more than likely last) country-music inspired sermon series.

In two weeks we’re going to launch a 4-part series that’s a take off of the 2008 CMT Awards. We’re calling it the “CMT Awards.”

The CMT stands for “Corinthian Moral Troubles.”

When you read through the pages of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church in Corinth (1 Corinthians), you begin to wonder if you’re reading the lyrics to a country music song – there’s always someone fighting, drinking, and cheating on somebody.

After Paul founded this tiny church in the cosmopolitan Greek city of Corinth in 52 a.d., he left to start more churches in other cities. In his absence the people in that new church began making immoral lifestyle choices that jeopardized the life of the church.

So Paul shot off 1 Corinthians, challenging them point by point to change their ways. Their immoral choices were beyond anything we read about anywhere else in New Testament! Paul essentially awarded them with what could be called the “CMT Awards” – The Corinthian Moral Troubles Awards. Their crazy lifestyle choices took the prize!

So starting on May 11th we’re going to look at those awards, and the issues that prompted them. We’re going to do so because, quite honestly, Paul could have just as easily written that letter to any church today, even our own.

Well, that’s the series in a nutshell – 1 Corinthians with a little country twang.

I just have four simple requests:

1. Do not make out with your hot cousin in the back row during the worship service, unless she's Carrie Underwood.

2. Do not bring beer coolers or dogs into the church building.

3. Please park all trailers in the back section of the parking lot.

4. Post a comment and give me your favorite country music song and I’ll pass that on to our Art’s team. We're looking for ideas.

God help us. God help us all.

You've come a long way baby. LOL! I listened to country music for a few years. Not too much as of late, but I still like it. Anything by Rascal Flatts or Martina McBride would be my pick. Looking forward to the sermon series! Sharon

I swore I would never like country music for the same reasons…I even moved to Nashville and still fought it, until I was exposed to some upstart named Garth Brooks who had “Friends in Low Places”. That hooked me. Another song that may work for this series is “Who’s Cheatin’ Who” by Alan Jackson. Looking forward to the series!

If you sing this song, I will sell all I have and tithe it to your church.

Check out "Angel's Hands" by Rodney Atkins. It's on his "If You're Going Through Hell" album. It's an interesting perspective on God's, um, perspective.

There will come a day by Faith Hill is such an awesome song and would be so powerful in a church setting. I am looking forward to this series.

Drugs or Jesus by Tim McGraw is such a powerful song that really speaks volumes. This series sounds awesome. I can't wait for it.

I spent this past week with my sisters painting my parents' house. They're both country fans and I tried in vain to convince them I don't like country. Knowing the words to the songs they played may have hurt my position. And after living in the South for 18 years, baby can I twang!

As for songs, how about Just Another Day in Paradise by Phil Vassar? Great lyrics.

Speaking as a United Country Western Dance Council World Champion (bet you didn't even know there was such a thing!!), I have much experience with country music.

My Dad used to quote many country song lyrics in his sermons...One that comes to mind is When It Comes To Love,You Don't Count The Cost (Billy Dean). Another, of course, was The Gambler by Kenny Rogers. You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em....life lessons aplenty!

I became a country music fan between 1992 and 1997. During those five years I had to drive round-trip from Philadelphia to East Tennessee 15 -20 times a year and almost always through the night. Country music was the only thing available for most of the way. I got hooked.

My vote is clear. For your sermon on 1 Corinthians 12-14, open the service with Deeper than the Holler by Randy Travis, then cut to an instrumental while someone reads chapter 13.

It isn't a fit for your series but many days I hum myself to sleep with Tim McGraw's Where the Green Grass Grows.

I could spend a lot of time on this. I think that you may be surprised how many of your people are closet country fans. I hope we get a report as the series progresses.

My daddy always told me that there are only two kinds of music in the world. He said son, "there's Country, and there's Western."

OK, making Ben sing country music would be priceless...I'll put aside my vehement hatred for the despicable genre just to listen to that! But he's GOTTA twang, man!

Ells and I have been country music fans for awhile, but early on in our marriage we were definitely rockers, no country to be seen. So as I remember it, the very first song we actually listened to - in a truck stop off of Route 81 in PA - was called 'The Girls Get Prettier at Closing Time'. Now there's wisdom and there's just plain crap in that one, but thought you might consider it as fodder for 'what not to think about as a Corinthian Christian'!! Looking forward to CCV twist on country!! You go, boy!

Brian,

I agree with Sharon. You have come a very long way baby.

I used to listen only to classic rock until about 5 years ago. Now most of what I listen to are Country Music songs (along with contemporary Christian music), of course. I guarantee if you listen carefully to the stories within some of these songs you will find some that will put a tear in your eye. My favorite country artists are by Reba McEntire, Bonnie Raitt, LeAnn Rimes and Martina McBride, in that order.

First it's country music and then Nascar racing. You know they go hand in hand. Big Big country fan. I think Tim McGraw's Live like you were dying is the best.

you've got to do something Charlie Daniels...he combines the best of country and rock...and he did a lot more than just 'the devil went down to georgia.' but that could work too. -greg

Please don't sing "Jesus take the wheel" I think that Jesus would HIGHLY disapprove of anyone letting go of the wheel. I very much dislike that song simply for the lack of safety awareness!!

I am just saying . . .

I can't believe how many of us have come out of the woodwork. You could PACK the house with a country music inspired sermon series.

I can see the banner on the side of the church now . . .

LIVE LIKE YOU WERE DYING - TIM MCGRAW - I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

What a great idea. I think there are more country fans than you think. Thre are a lot of songs that are inspiring from country artists.
I Saw God Today - George Straight
Unanswered Prayers - Garth Brooks
Monday Morning Church - Alan Jackson
When I get where I am going - Brad Paisley & Dolly Parton
The River - Garth Brooks
You are Not Alone Tonight - Keith Urban

These songs are so haunting and incorporate God in a way that can ordinary people can relate to. I hope to hear some of these powerful songs. I have goosebumps just thinking of it.

I am excited about this series and can't wait to bring my friends.

I almost did not send this to you because I was offended. I love country music, I like Nascar, I own a spitoon and my children are
8th cousins once removed (seriously).

But I like you so here it is -

Jimmy Wayne, "I love you this much." We used it one easter and told the story of Jimmy. Go to his website and see his real story. We closed with this song explaining the story we told at the beginning was about Jimmy Wayne. We talked about the love of The Father and how he is different from some earhtly fathers a lot of people have had. Watch it - www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUiW-zC8qNO

The second one is by Brooks & Dunn, "Believe." Never have used it but the chorus is very worshipful. Watch it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLA06UmFg0s

And the last one is Randy Travis, "Three Wooden Crosses." It is a great song and uses the word "hooker."

I'd put my vote in for Little Big Town's 'Bones' a close second would be Kenny Chesney's "Don't blink'.

You're a nut. Love it.

CMT - Corinthian Moral Troubles

Collegville, Perkiomen, Springford, Phoenixville Moral Troubles. Just manifest right under our noses in "Day of Silence" at each of the High Schools. How many parents even new about this?

Might use this as one of your talking points.

Honestly, I don't know if I should be scared or excited that so many people at CCV and beyond like country music!

I'm still in shock days after reading this post. If the pastor at my church can all the sudden start liking country music, perhaps there is hope that he will one day become a Penn State and Philly sports fan. After all, these are WAY better alternatives to country music.

Looking forward to the series despite not being a country fan.

Brian,

It is amazing when we do a country song how many people are mouthing the words.

you have to do jesus take the wheel, because the song is about letting jesus into your life, and that he will be there for you in good times and bad he will be there to help you through tuff times, so i really would appreciate if you could do jesus take the wheel thank you

Anonymous said...

obviously, anonymous does not know what the song jesus take the wheel is about! It is not about safety at all, it is about letting jesus take control of your life doing what jesus would want you to do. I did get a good laugh out of them thinking it was about safety!!!! Please sing this song, It is so appropriate for our church. thank you, Lisa

why hasn't anyone listed some of the rougher, but true songs of country...like 'she thinks my tractor is sexy.' or 'save a horse, ride a cowboy'...you haven't shyed away from these kinds of topics in the past! they could make for a great teaching time.

A definite song for the CMT lesson would be Every Day by Rascal Flatts.

Brian - Maybe you can cash in, we've already used bo lane's song in our services.

The only other country songs I know (surprisingly enough) are "My Baby Thinks He's a Train" and "Swingin'"....oh, yeah.....and there's "Achy Brakey Heart"....always a classic :)
